1: Glue colorful pompoms down the top side of a wooden clothespin for body.

2: Glue eyes on pompom head (the one on the closed end of the clothespin) Now you have a caterpillar!

3. Cut a 6x6 in square from tissue paper or fabric. Push opposite sides together until the clothespin can pinch the middle of the square. Butterfly wings!

Narrative Language: Who is the story about? What is the problem he is trying to solve? What does he do, and how does he feel? How do the pictures help us know how he is feeling? Retell/act out the story!

Extended Vocabulary:

--We pretended to be hungry caterpillars and thirsty butterflies. How are they different? How are they the same?

--We sorted food by category, and compared the results

--We practiced colors by flying the butterflies to colored flower cut-outs

Pronoun Practice: What did HE eat? Where is HE?

Prepositions: We practiced through, around, behind, under, over as we helped our caterpillars eat their food.

Literacy:

We explored the words: food, moon, and cocoon. Counting the sounds, and manipulating them to change the words. Older kids: Practiced reading and writing double <oo> patterns: spoon, noon, room, boom, soon, broom, poof, hoot, roof

Home Connection Ideas:

Talk about caterpillars and butterflies you see outside

Practice counting food items

Eat the same fruit as the caterpillar on Monday-Friday

Talk about food that helps you grow, and what food might give you a tummy ache

Pretend to be caterpillars and transform into butterflies. Fly around the room together, and tell each other where you are flying.
